Steps to Becoming a Franciscan Handmaid of Mary
The First Step...
is the initial inquiry period. The applicant visits with the community so she and the community may spend time becoming acquainted. The applicant has a chance to receive answers for any questions she might have, as well as respond to any questions that the Community might have for her.
The Second Step...
is the candidacy period, which is used to prepare the candidate for the novitiate. Depending on the needs of the individual, this can last from six months to one year. During this time, the candidate explores the true meaning of vocation and her suitability for religious life. She should continue her education and is expected to support herself while residing in the Convent.
The Third Step...
is the novitiate period, which is the time to prepare for pronouncing one’s vows. The ceremony called the reception begins this period and marks the official entrance of the candidate, now known as the novice, into the community. During the two year novitiate period, the novice engages in prayer, study and apostolic work. At the end of the novitiate, the novice pronounces her vows for one year.
The Fourth Step...
is period called temporary profession. At this time, the professed sister renews her vows annually for five years as she prepares to pronounce her final vows. The sister continues with apostolic work, prayers and studies. At the conclusion of temporary profession, the sister pronounces her final vows.
The Life of a Professed Religious
All of the above steps constitute the initial formation period. After final profession, the sister continues her life as a professed religious. She will continue with her formation throughout her life, dedicating it to a life of prayer, working within the community and participating in the apostolate for evangelization.
